Mitch and Argo In Trouble: Part 3

The highwaymen were still clumsily moving about. What appeared to be the lead figure realized they had totally blown it. “Hey, you clowns forgot…” Too late. He was turning around just in time to see Argo punch him in the face. Argo quickly jumped out of the way as a hail of gunfire riddled the lead figure’s body. All manner of curses were uttered and gunfire quickly went in every direction from the incompetent gang.

The shooting stopped and the gang clumsily got up and started looking around as Argo jumped on one of them and elbowed him in the throat. Argo took the fool’s gun away with ease and sprayed at the remainder of the gang. The gang scattered about as the gunfire tore into them. Argo couldn’t tell what damage he had been able to do, but a huge figure knifed at him and Argo truly had no idea how he was able to get out of the way of it. He swung with the rifle butt and missed. The figure continued to attack. Argo noticed several figures about. “We got ‘em, boys.” Someone shouted. Argo wasn’t going down without a fight. Everything he’d been through, oh what an experience his life was, …gone just like that, by a couple of nothings that were now surrounding him. Damn! What a waste!

There was a loud yell from behind what Argo thought was the gang. It was familiar. Next thing Argo knew, MITCH was howling and swinging a sword. That son-of-a-bitch! GUNS weren’t permitted in the town, but it said NOTHING about swords! Mitch, you smart asshole! He must have had it in his long jacket the whole time! Argo finally realized what Mitch had been saying to him for years, …ALWAYS trust a good sword. Mitch was strong, with the stimulant, stronger, … and certainly a little crazy. But he was also pretty damn smart. And now faster and more dangerous.

Argo gun-butted the mysterious figure and took his knife as the figure fell. The drawback now was he couldn’t use the gun for fear of hitting Mitch. If he survived this he would learn everything he could about knives, swords, etc. Mitch was still loud and lethal but Argo knew it wouldn’t last much longer. He grabbed a figure and slashed at it’s throat. The next figure swung at Argo and hit him in the chest. The figure that Argo took the knife from was getting up. Somehow a figure hit Mitch dead on in the face. Mitch, obviously coming down from the stimulant, was looking like he would crash any moment. Argo stuck the knife directly in the strange figure’s chest and spun around to kick the original knife holder in the mouth.

Mitch was having trouble, the stimulant was wearing off and he knew it. He would crash very soon. The stimulant worked by energizing your own personal stored energy. Once it wore off, you were spent. Even though Mitch had plenty of “stored” energy already, it could only do so much. Unless he could find a way to wolf down a couple dozen donuts within a split second he was going down. Argo swung the knife at a figure and missed, the figure tried to shoot at him but was so close he couldn’t aim and get the shot off. Argo stuck the clumsy figure and hit square, he then used the knife to gut more of the figure and do some major damage. As the figure fell and Argo grabbed his gun, Argo turned around just in time to see Mitch crumple to the ground in exhaustion.

The last figure tried to get up but it was moot. Argo easily spun around and shot him before he was upright.

… Mitch slowly opened his eyes, as he laboriously looked around and saw he was lying in the foliage he moved with a start. Argo was putting the wheel back on the “sixer”, saw him and said “We’re ok. Good thing for us we know how to handle situations like that.” Mitch looked around at the carnage and took his time standing up, “You always were luckier than me too. If I was alone they would have been professionals and then it would have been REAL trouble.” Mitch kicked at a body. “Don’t worry,” Argo said, “While you were out I already looted them. Not much, but I would like Tash to take a look at this sniper rifle. It might be of some worth.”

Mitch got up and slowly looked around. “I would laugh at the irony, but it isn’t funny.” He said. “They try to rob us. But WE wind up taking what they have.” Argo nodded his head, “We were supposed to be on a fucking vacation.” Mitch helped Argo load up the “sixer” “I don’t think we should give them the decency of a burial.” “Best not to, someone might need to know about this.” Argo replied. “I really wish they hadn’t a done that.” Mitch said as he got into the driver’s seat of the “sixer”. “Same here, but we do have every right to defend OURSELVES,” Argo added.

Mitch started the “sixer” up and as he started driving off into the sunset acknowledged, “They choose it, but I still think it’s just a senseless waste of life.”

Mitch and Argo in Trouble: Part 2

Several figures were shuffling about. They were nearly tripping over themselves in the lightly forested area. They had guns, and they certainly looked like they were up to no good. One of the figures was looking through binoculars and threw a hand out. He was waving his hand around, “Looks like we got something” One of the figures said. “Allright, a customer” another figure said. “Okay gang, we know the plan.” Said one figure that appeared to be the leader. The group then stumbled about and began taking up aggressive positions in the forested cover along the side of what appeared to be a road. A figure with a sniper rifle began taking aim.

Argo was still at the wheel. He was thinking on all that he, Mitch, Brenwood, Stanton and Bart (his “core”) had been through together. He looked at Mitch who was yawning and looked back at the road. He was thinking …“Think our stories will be made into a …” If he wasn’t a trained mercenary, he might have panicked, but then again if he wasn’t a trained mercenary he probably wouldn’t have noticed the flash of gun scope and ugly crack of a rifle shot headed straight for him. He immediately swerved to the left and the middle passenger side tire was suddenly out of air with a loud splat. Mitch was swearing “ What the…!!?” before he quickly realized, being a trained mercenary himself, that they were under attack. Argo tried his best but unfortunately with the loss of the middle tire, could only swerve and crash into a tree on the side of the road. It was a good thing Argo and Mitch had instinctively attached their seat/body belts. Both Argo and Mitch quickly unlatched their belts and jumped out of the “sixer.” They rushed behind the vehicle for cover.

“Son-of-a-bitch!!” Mitch howled, looking over the sixer, “What the fuck is this?” Argo looking over the sixer, and quickly jumping back as a bullet missed his head, “Highwaymen? … “ “Some things NEVER change” Mitch growled. “We were SUPPOSED to be on a FUCKING vacation!” “Guess THAT’S shot!,” Argo sarcastically, but with no intent of humor, growled back. “…and we’re unarmed too. What IS this?” Mitch continued, still looking forward, trying to see who or what was shooting at them.

Another shot rang past Argo’s head. “Well at least we know whoever this is, they’re not professionals.” Argo said. “I now know where they’re shooting from ’cause I saw the scope flash again.” “Plan? ” Mitch asked. Argo thought aloud, “One of us draws their fire and the other sneaks around and surprises them, while the other circles over and jumps back in from behind.” “Simple, but it might work,” Mitch said, “Besides I can’t think of anything else right now.” Several bullets rang out and hit the sixer as well as made Argo and Mitch duck behind it. “Allright,” Mitch started, “YOU always were a much better mover than me. So, YOU go left and try to sneak around, AFTER I, go right and try to draw their fire.” Argo looked at Mitch with an uncertain expression. Mitch said, “I’m hoping the foliage gives me enough cover to keep ‘em busy.” Mitch pulled something out of his pocket “Oh, looky here, … Somehow I managed to pack THIS in my pocket.”

Argo knew EXACTLY what it was. It was a stimulant pill. They worked, but you PAID for it later. They were best used for situations such as this. Mitch popped the pill and Argo knew the routine. …count 10-15 seconds and let it rip. Mitch bellowed at the top of his lungs, (He …was …LOUD!!), and darted and zig zagged as best as his huge body could move. He ran across the road, somehow managing to evade the bullets that came screaming all around him. (This trick probably wouldn’t work if these were professionals they were dealing with) Mitch made it to the other side howling all kinds of vile language and making a huge target of himself. Luckily the foliage gave him enough cover to avoid being hit. Argo then counted 1 to 10 himself and ran the opposite direction as Mitch. No gunfire went his way. “Yes!” Argo thought as he kept moving towards where he HAD to assume the attackers were.

Mitch and Argo in Trouble: Part 1

“Mitch and Argo in trouble”

Argo was on the driver’s side tossing his rucksack into the back of the ‘sixer’. Mitch was drinking a soda, carrying his rucksack. This small burg was a nice diversion, Argo thought as he looked at the street. The buildings, for the most part didn’t rise very high and the town was relatively clean. Nothing like some of the big cities and other overdeveloped urban centers he’d seen. Argo watched as Mitch finished the soda, tossed the can into a recycling container and tossed his sack into the back of the ‘sixer’ on top of Argo’s. “Sure hate for it to end, but that’s how it goes” Argo said as he jumped into the driver’s seat and Mitch slid into the passenger’s side. “Agree 100 percent” Mitch said in his deep voice. The two of them had been on a three day pass away from the small mercenary company they were both a big part of. The pass was sorely needed, but being the company was so small, passes had to be given out sparingly. For the most part, Colonel Jefferson, was a pretty good commander and a good guy, but leadership, well, it had it’s drawbacks. The company had decided to take an entire month long break, but passes HAD to be given out very conservatively. No telling when a big contract could come in, they often did, on a moment’s notice. It would be impossible to bring the company back so quickly if it was scattered about.

Argo was thinking as he started to drive the ‘sixer’. Sometimes his mind would wander… “We call it a ‘sixer’ because it, as all of our 6 x 6 drive vehicles, started out from a company but they’ve been redone, rebuilt, and modified so much by the mechanics, Yip and Tracy, (and frequently, who knows who, someone else), there was no point in calling them anything else. Still thinking, Argo went on, he looked at Mitch sitting next to him and knew Mitch at times could be just as spacey (Still use that word?) as himself. “ “Jefferson”, … his name is Jeffcoat Ray Sohn. …Jeff. R. Son, for short. Wonder if he will get any free time at all?” “He’ll leave ‘the cat lady’ Oskilla in charge and take Cyndi for a weekend trip…” Argo’s mind continued to wander. Sometimes he and his “core” buddies –including Mitch, looked at Oskilla that way due to her Kodac race.

Argo and Mitch had dressed like drifters for the pass but they knew they wouldn’t fool anyone into thinking they were anything but mercenaries. Mercenaries, good or bad, or whatever else, always had a certain attitude which they themselves found hard to cover. (Must have been something in the lifestyle?) They chose this small town here in this province for the sole reason of relaxation. They had a couple of days of drinking, sleeping, enjoying being in a small relaxed atmosphere (CRUCIAL for what they do). Just by what they were wearing, nothing with any insignia or strange colors, light jackets, (Mitch was wearing his long coat) cargo pants, boots, ANYONE could look that way. No guns were allowed (in the open) so Argo hoped they didn’t stick out without any, but not fully believing it. None of the locals asked any questions, but Argo was sure they knew. Perhaps this town had enough “drifters” or “mercs” or whatever that they weren’t really unusual.

Argo thought of his fraternal twin brother. “Maybe it was better Brenwood COULDN’T go with us? Cyndi KNOWS what kind of trouble we tend to get into when we’re together. So just Mitch and me this time.” Argo noticed they were now on the road in the forested area they drove through to get to this town. It was a lightly built road that had little traffic, no traffic as of now. They would be in here for a little while. Mitch mumbled “Trying to think how to “extend” our passes, but that would be unfair to the rest of the company” “Tch, Tch, Mitch.” Argo said, “Always the master Sargent” “Wonder if it’s worth it sometimes?” Mitch responded. His dark skin looking powerful in the near dusk light. Argo watched Mitch fiddle with the navcom. “We should,… sadly, be back to the ship a couple hours after dark. I’ll take over the wheel in an hour.” Argo nodded his head.
